IKEA-Inspired Swedish Meatballs Recipe
IKEA opened its first store in the Philippines in 2021. Since then, locals have embraced their flat-pack furniture and signature Swedish meatballs with equal enthusiasm. It may be easier to get in now, but you’ll still find long lines at their in-store restaurant all hours of the day. Shoppers just can’t get enough of this meaty menu item!
If you don’t have the time or energy for all that, you can always try recreating IKEA’s Swedish meatballs at home. Unlike the ones you might have with spaghetti Bolognese, these are smaller and much quicker to cook. This recipe lists all the spices that make them unique. It also comes with a creamy gravy. Have a ball!

Ingredients
- For the meatballs:
- 1/2 white onion
- 2 white bread, cubed
- 1 pc Knorr Beef Cube, dissolved in 2 tbsp warm milk or water
- 300 g ground pork
- 300 g ground beef
- 1 pc egg, beaten
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp fine salt
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 1/8 tsp cinnamon powder
- 2 tbsp canola oil
- For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 pc Knorr Beef Cube
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup heavy or canned cream
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley
Cooking Method
Complete the experience by pairing these Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and fruit jam. In Sweden and other parts of Europe, lingonberry jam is a common accompaniment to meat dishes. It’s tart and slightly sweet, so it pairs well with savory food. If this specific jam is hard to find where you are, cranberry sauce and raspberry jam make great substitutes. Go for the less sugary options, so you can still get those sour notes. You can also keep it very Pinoy and enjoy your meatballs with freshly steamed rice. Always a good choice!
